The director of Waterford Institute of Technology has called on the Government to make science a compulsory subject in both primary and secondary schools.

In a keynote lecture at Kilkenny Castle to mark the 320th anniversary of the foundation of the University College of St Canice, Prof. Byrne spoke of the worrying trend in recent years where students' performances in maths and science has fallen considerably.
