Taxi drivers across the country have begun a one-day strike in protest at a new nationwide fare structure due to come into effect this September.

Extra charges for luggage and the special charge for picking up passengers at Dublin Airport are due to be abolished as part of the reforms.

The drivers claim the taxi regulator has ignored their concerns, but the regulator says the new fare structure is the result of widespread consultation and has described today's strike as unnecessary.

Up to 14,000 taxi drivers are expected to take part in the stoppage.
