Major fire destroys Cabra factory

Firefighters have successfully contained a major fire at a factory in north Dublin that forced the temporary closure of a busy commuter rail line this morning.

The blaze broke out at the Protim Abrasives factory in the Ballyboggin Industrial Estate in Cabra just before 4am.

The factory has been completed destroyed, while the rail line into Connolly Station was also temporarily closed as a result of the incident.

Nine units of the fire brigade were dispatched to the scene and managed to bring the fire under control after a number of hours.

Iarnrod Éireann says all commuter services are now back to normal, but some traffic restrictions are still in place around the Ballyboggan and Broomebridge Roads.

Meanwhile, six construction workers were treated for smoke inhalation last night after a fire at a hotel in Kilkenny.

The fire broke out at the Hotel Kilkenny on College Road when sparks from a welding operation set fire to insulation in a cavity wall during work on an extension to the building.

All guests were evacuated and nobody was seriously hurt in the blaze.
