Haughey begins final journey to St Fintan’s Cemetery
Former Taoiseach Charles Haughey has departed on his final journey to St Fintan's Cemetery in the Sutton area of north Dublin.
Hundreds of mourners are lining the route as the 80-year-old's remains travel from Our Lady of Consolation Church in Donnycarney following his funeral mass this morning.
The mass was celebrated by Mr Haughey's brother, Fr Eoghan Haughey, with Fianna Fail TD Brian Lenihan and the former Taoiseach's daughter, Eimear, providing the readings.
PJ Mara and Ciaran Haughey read prayers of the faithful, as did Mr Haughey's cousin Mary Murphy and his long-time friend Seamus Cullimore, a former Wexford TD.
Poet Brendan Kennelly also read from a number of poems, including Patrick Kavanagh's On Raglan Road, while Finbar Fury played a rendition of the Lonesome Boatman.
Mr Haughey is due to be buried under a sycamore tree at St Fintan's Cemetery in Sutton, with current Taoiseach and Fianna Fail leader Bertie Ahern giving the graveside oration.
