Government accused of letting west go into 'serious decline'
The official body that promotes economic and social development in the west has accused the Government of failing to prioritise rural development.
In a report published today, the Western Development Commission says nearly half of all rural areas in the west are suffering serious decline.
The report calls for more investment to encourage enterprise, tourism and economic development in the region.
Minister for Rural Affairs Eamon O'CuÃv has promised that the Government will consider the document carefully and says he has no doubt the recommendations will be taken on board.
“This report backs up the evidence of many observers who are witnessing the continued depopulation and decline of many rural communities despite a period of unprecedented official prosperity," said Sinn Féin spokesperson on rural development, Martin Ferris.
"The declining numbers of family farms, and the lack of alternative employment as well as the withdrawal of public services is contributing to this problem.
"While it might be argued that this is an inevitable consequence of growth, that is not a position that most of us would be prepared to stand over."
