A criminal prosecution may be taken over the death of a 21-year-old man in a hit-and-run incident in Dundalk, Co Louth, an inquest heard tonight.

A criminal prosecution may be taken over the death of a 21-year-old man in a hit-and-run incident in Dundalk, Co Louth, an inquest heard tonight.

Brendan Leggett, from Dowdallshill in Dundalk was struck by a car which failed to stop on Park Street in the town last September.

Insp Leo McGinn from Dundalk Station told the Dublin City Coroner’s Court a file on the young man’s death on September 14, 2005 has been sent to the Director of Public Prosecutions.

“I envisage at this stage criminal prosecutions will arise,” Insp McGinn said.

Mr Leggett died in Beaumont Hospital from head injuries last September.

His brother, Robert Leggett, said: “He had actually just taken a year out before he went back to college.”

Dublin City Coroner, Dr Brian Farrell, who adjourned the inquest to May, said: “I am aware of the circumstances surrounding Brendan’s death but I cannot make any comment.”
