Inquest to hear of pensioner's Garda car death

An inquest is to due to hear today how a pensioner was fatally injured when knocked down by a Garda patrol car.

Mary Seavers, 74, of Farmhill Park, Goatstown, Dublin, died in Beaumont Hospital on June 15 last year, three weeks after she was struck by a Garda squad car in Clonskeagh.

Mrs Seavers was waiting at a bus stop on Clonskeagh Road in the south of the city on the afternoon of May 22 when she was struck by the patrol car.

Witnesses who were in the Clonskeagh Road area at the time of the crash and the Garda driver are expected to give evidence before today’s sitting.

The inquest has already heard that no criminal prosecutions will be taken by the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) over the incident.

Mrs Seavers died three weeks after the collision from acute respiratory distress syndrome due to multi-organ failure caused by head and leg trauma.

Dublin City Coroner Dr Brian Farrell has assured Mrs Seaver’s sons they will be given access to the Garda report on the crash in light of the DPP’s decision not to prosecute.
