Mother's pledge over probe into son's post-vaccination death

The family of a 22-year-old Dublin man who died over a decade ago tonight vowed to do whatever it takes to have his death fully examined.

Vera Duffy, mother of Alan Duffy, from Howth Road, Clontarf, Dublin, has been looking for an inquest into his death to establish a three-in-one vaccination was to blame.

Dublin City Coroner, Dr Brian Farrell, today agreed to attempt to reconvene the inquest jury which last heard evidence of Mr Duffy’s death seven years ago.

After the brief hearing Mrs Duffy said: “I’ll do whatever it takes, whatever is needed because I won’t stop.

“We have tribunals for everything else, this is children’s lives, why not have another one.”

The inquest heard that the Coroner, following a judgement of the Supreme Court, would not be able to investigate any alleged link between the 22-year-old’s death and the three-in-one vaccination.

Mrs Duffy said: “Unfortunately the legislation says it is not the Coroner’s function to do that.”

She added: “The Coroner is going to attempt to bring back the old jury and hopefully they can recall the evidence.

“We will see where it goes from there, if that is not possible then I feel we are probably looking at a new inquest.”
