Committee to seek referendum on random breath-testing
A committee of TDs and Senators is reportedly set to call for a possible referendum to permit the introduction of random breath-testing of motorists.
Reports this morning said the Oireachtas committee on enterprise and small business would make the recommendation as part of a study into reform of the insurance industry due to be published today.
The committee will reportedly urge the Government to consider holding a referendum to clear the way for random breath-testing, something that has been demanded by the National Safety Council for some time.
At present, Gardaí can only ask motorists to take a breath test if there is reason to suspect they are driving under the influence of alcohol
