Gardaí launch murder investigation as Sligo shooting victim dies

A murder investigation is underway following the death of a man who was shot at his home in Sligo town last night.

23-year-old Sam Smith was shot a number of times in the arm and stomach when he answered his front door, in Carroll Drive in the Cranmore area of the town, just before half past 11pm yesterday.

He was confronted by a lone attacker armed with a handgun.

He was taken to Sligo General Hospital where he was being treated for his injuries but he died at around 6pm today.
