Festive drinkers warned of dangers
People should be beware of the dangers of alcohol this festive season with liquor playing a significant role in road and fire deaths, it was warned tonight.
The National Safety Council (NSC) moved to highlight the dangers of drink as statistics show alcohol was a significant factor in 33% of fatal road crashes and 40% of fire related deaths in Ireland every year.
“Remember also that if you are drinking and intend walking home, you could be a hazard to both yourself and other road-users,” Alan Richardson of the NSC said.
“As many as one in five pedestrians could be dying on our roads each year from walking into the path of a vehicle and lying on unlit rural roads, all brought on by drinking too much alcohol.”
Mr Richardson said that Christmas and New Year was a high risk period for fire outbreak in the home.
“Cigarettes, chip or grill pans, electrical appliances and candles become potentially lethal if used while under the influence of alcohol. The message - don’t overdo it, drink sensibly,” he said.
The safety authority warned pedestrians and cyclists to ensure they wear bright clothes and reflective body bands.
Motorists were urged to drive at an appropriate speed for conditions and circumstances and ensure everyone in the vehicle wears a seat-belt.
The NSC said drivers should ensure the lights on their cars are working, the brakes are in good working order and tyres are in good condition.
Mr Richardson urged drivers to be alert and watch out for revellers stepping out onto roads unexpectedly.
Artificial trees should be pre-treated to increase flame resistance, the NSC said.
Mr Richardson said people should ensure candles are kept out of the reach of children and away from drafts or vents.
He said people should never remove batteries from smoke alarms to use in children’s Christmas toys.
