Demands for independent inquiry into McDowell's actions
The Irish Council for Civil Liberties is calling on the Taoiseach to order an independent inquiry into Michael McDowell's actions in the Frank Connolly controversy.
It wants the Standards in Public Office Commission to look at the Justice Minister's use of Garda intelligence to make allegations about the former journalist and head of the Centre for Public Inquiry.
They believe that the Minister’s actions are a threat to democracy.
Director of the ICCL, Aisling Reidy believes Mr McDowell has abused his powers.
She said he has violated certain basic human rights, such as the right to a good name and the right to freedom of expression.
Ms Reidy said she believes an independent inquiry is entirely necessary because the Justice Minister has also violated the relationship between the government and the Gardaí.
