Man charged with firearms offences after loyalist riots

A painter and decorator was allegedly caught with seven guns at the height of loyalist rioting that has engulfed Belfast, a court heard today.

Colin Harbinson, 34, was also charged with possessing bomb-making equipment, ammunition and terrorist clothing.

Mr Harbinson spoke only to confirm he understood the charges against him during a brief hearing at Belfast Magistrates’ Court.

Harbinson, of Highfield Drive in the north of the city, was arrested on Saturday when a loyalist mob went on the rampage after a re-routed Orange Order parade.

Loyalist gunmen opened fire on police and soldiers as the violence which has continued for three nights first erupted.

Harbinson faces three charges: possession of seven handguns and assorted ammunition with intent to endanger life; a length of piping and fireworks, also with intent to endanger life; and a balaclava which police believe was for use in terrorist acts.

He made no reply when accused, but police sergeant Gary Reid told the court he could connect him with the offences.

Harbinson was remanded in custody to appear again by video link on October 11.
