Accommodation for elderly given €9m boost

The Government is to provide more than €9m to build sheltered accommodation for elderly people in Dublin, Minister Noel Ahern said today.

Funding of more than €8.7m will be used to provide 56 units of supported accommodation for the elderly at St. Clare’s, Glasnevin, the Minister for Housing and Urban Renewal said.

In addition there will be two new day care centres for the elderly at the complex and a health care facility run by the Health Service Executive.

The announcement also includes funding of more than €300,000 for associated communal facilities, he said.

“I am very pleased to provide this funding for the housing project which will allow elderly residents to live in an independent type setting with care and support available to them when required,” Mr Ahern said.

“We need to allow our senior citizens to maintain a good quality of independent community living for as long as is possible and this new scheme provides for that.”

The funding has been allocated to FOLD Housing Association Ltd who will provide the scheme in partnership with Dublin City Council.
