Govt urged to invest more in maths and science teaching
The Association of Secondary Teachers has called on the Government to invest more money in facilities for teaching maths and science subjects.
The association made the call today in response to the high failure rate in Leaving Cert maths and science subjects.
It said the failure rate was caused not only by problems with the curriculum, but also by the fact that many schools had inadequate facilities and large classes.
ASTI president Sheila Parsons said: "The Government needs to implement recommendations that there would be more laboratories and more investment in teaching in the sciences.
"Maths is quite a practical subject. Pupils need individual attention at maths and, when you have a class of 30, you cannot give it."
