Swimmers take plunge in Liffey swim

Around 170 swimmers took the plunge into the River Liffey today for the annual Dublin Docklands swim.

Loretta Lambkin, from the Docklands Authority, said its fourth annual swim in the city centre river went off without a hitch.

Around 120 men and 50 women jumped in for the 150-metre course in the River Liffey – which was up from 150 dedicated swimmers last year.

“We were absolutely delighted with how it went. The water was warm, it was good to have a few sunny days before hand,” Ms Lambkin said.

“There were one or two kids that took part in it as well and they did fairly well.”

The authority said this was the first club event of the season.

The next event for the area is the Liffey Challenge, a competitive boat race along the river, which takes place on Friday, July 22.

The Docklands Liffey Swim is part of a series of events organised by the authority, which is working to revitalise that area of the river.

Over 20,000 people flocked to the Docklands Maritime Festival last weekend to see the visiting Tall Ships, art exhibits and to shop at the market.
