Body of man swept away by river is found

A man’s body was recovered today after he was swept away by a flooded river as he tried to rescue his dog.

He vanished in strong currents in the Bannagh River near Kesh, Co Fermanagh.

It is understood he comes from Omagh, Co Tyrone.

His body was recovered not long after the search resumed today following a failed attempt to find it in darkness last night.

An Irish Coastguard helicopter from Dublin, the RNLI lifeboat from Enniskillen and police were called in after the man got into difficulties at Drummoney Falls, on a stretch of the river going down towards lower Lough Erne.

A police spokesman said: “We think the man was attempting to rescue a dog in difficulties but then fell in.

“The river was moving quite fast, about four miles an hour, because of the heavy rain.”
