Man quizzed over Liberties murder released
A man who was being questioned in relation to the murder of champion kickboxer James Curran has been released without charge, it emerged today.
Curran, 42, was shot in the head in the Green Lizard pub in Dublin’s south inner city last Sunday.
The man had been questioned in Kevin Street garda station under Section 30 of the Offences Against the State Act
A Garda spokesman said he was released last night without charge.
“A file will be sent to DPP,” he said.
A woman who was also being questioned in relation to the murder was released yesterday.
Gardaí believe Curran was targeted in a revenge attack. The father-of-one was originally from the south inner city but had been living in Whitehall.
He trained young people in martial arts in a room above Fusco’s takeaway, which is located around 300 metres from the scene of the shooting on Meath Street.
The gunman, who had been drinking in the Green Lizard pub on Francis Street beforehand, fired a number of shots at Curran while a karaoke session was taking place.
One of them hit him in the head and he was pronounced dead shortly afterwards at Saint James’s Hospital.
The gunman fled the scene on foot in the direction of Thomas Street or the Coombe.
He was described as being middle-aged, between 5ft 10in and 6ft in height, well dressed and with grey hair.
Gardaí were today still trying to locate a number of customers who were in the bar at the time of the shooting.
Around 50 detectives from Kevin Street and Kilmainham Garda Stations have carried out house-to-house inquiries in the Francis Street area and viewed CCTV footage from the Green Lizard pub and other premises.
