Court quashes manslaughter conviction over Murphy death

The Court of Criminal Appeal today quashed the four-year jail sentence for manslaughter given to Dermot Laide in connection with the death of teenager Brian Murphy outside a Dublin nightclub.

It ordered a retrial but upheld Laide’s conviction for violent disorder.

In the case of Desmond Ryan, the Dublin court quashed his nine month sentence for violent disorder and did not order a retrial.

Laide (aged 23), who is in custody at the Midland Prison, still has a year to serve of a two-year sentence for violent disorder, while Ryan who was out on bail is free to go.

Laide, from Castleblaney, Co Monaghan, had been handed a four-year jail sentence for manslaughter and violent disorder in relation to the death of the 18-year-old outside Club Anabel in August 2000.

Desmond Ryan (aged 24), from Dalkey, Dublin, received a nine-month sentence for violent disorder.
