Gardaí question lorry driver after crash
Gardaí were questioning a lorry driver tonight in connection with the death of a married couple in a road crash.
The accident happened at 6.30am at Moyvilla, about three miles from Oranmore, on the Galway-Dublin road.
The husband and wife died when their car was involved in a collision with a lorry. Their bodies were taken to University College Hospital in Galway for a post-mortem examination.
The uninjured driver of the lorry was arrested and taken to Millstreet Garda station for questioning.
A Garda spokeswoman said he was being held under Section four of the Criminal Justice Act.
Meanwhile, gardai are continuing to investigate a fatal collision which occurred at Kilcooley, near Thurles in Co Tipperary on Wednesday night.
A 79-year-old male cyclist was fatally injured when he was struck by a car in the accident. A further 10 people have died on Irish roads so far this year than at the same point in 2004.
The National Safety Council said the number of people killed in collisions had already reached 49, up from 39 last year, which went on to become the highest end-of-year death toll since 2001.
A total of 10 people have been killed in the last week alone, it said.
