Students protest against Ringaskiddy incinerator

A group of Limerick students are ending a five-day walk today when they arrive at the proposed site of the country's first toxic waste incinerator in Ringaskiddy.

Anti-incinerator protestors are welcoming the students' help in their campaign to stop the incinerator.

Cork Harbour Alliance for a Safe Environment has secured leave to appeal permission to build the incinerator in the High Court.

Chairperson Mary O'Leary has accused the Government of turning a blind eye to the alternatives to incineration that are much cleaner and safer for the environment.

Ms O’Leary said it’s dangerous to locate the facility just 20 feet from a new maritime college.

She added that the local population of 14,000 have just one-humped back bridge to evacuate them in the event of a fire at the incineration plant.
