Two people were being questioned by police today about what is believed to be the largest-ever seizure of amphetamines in Northern Ireland.

The man and woman were arrested when police uncovered the drugs in a car they stopped in Co Antrim.

A PSNI spokesman said the 50kg (110lb) of amphetamines had a street value of around £500,000 (€780,000).

The seizure, at Scottstown Road in Ballymena, was part of a planned operation, said police.

Superintendent Terry Shevlin, the Ballymena District Commander, said the operation last night “underlines the determination of police to tackle the illegal drugs issue in the area”.
