Plans for 30,000 affordable houses

The Government is reportedly in talks with property developers about plans to construct 30,000 social and affordable houses throughout the country over the next four years.

Reports this morning said the average price of a new house under the proposals would be €220,000 in Dublin and €180,000 elsewhere.

The two separate plans were reportedly drawn up by developers, who have an obligation to construct or fund social and affordable housing based on the size of their developments.

Under one of the schemes, the developers would build 25,000 houses over four years.

The second scheme, proposed by the Irish Home Builders Association, would see developers and local authorities working in partnership to build 5,000 homes over two-and-a-half years.
