British man jailed for holiday death of Irish teen
A British man who killed an Irish teenage tourist during a bar brawl on the holiday island of Rhodes was jailed for 20 years today.
Peter Navarro stabbed 17-year-old Paddy Doran in the neck with a broken bottle during a fight in Faliraki in August 2003.
Navarro, 22, was found guilty of manslaughter today after claiming he had lashed out in self-defence.
A judge in Rhodes jailed him to 20 years and three months, a British Foreign Office spokesman confirmed.
The spokesman added: “He can appeal for a prison transfer to the UK but he would have to set the wheels in action through his lawyer.”
Greek law demands that Navarro, of Leasowe, Merseyside, serve three-fifths of his sentence before being eligible for parole, meaning he must spend at least 12 years behind bars.
The brawl took place in the Q Club following an argument between the two men and their friends.
Mr Doran was born in Ireland but was living in Peterborough when he went on holiday to Faliraki.
At an earlier hearing, Navarro’s lawyer, Akis Dimitriadis, claimed Mr Doran was picking his client up off the floor to hit him when he lashed out with the bottle.
Members of Mr Navarro’s and Mr Doran’s family were present during today’s proceedings.
