Inspectorate seeks action to improve care for children

The Social Services Inspectorate has called for action to improve the quality of care provided to children in care in Ireland, especially those looked after by their relatives.

In a report published today, the inspectorate said there were around 4,500 children in care in Irealnd, the vast majority of whom were in foster care.

It said that the quality of day-to-day care provided to these children was generally good, but expressed concern about the lack of staff vetting and staff difficulties in dealing with problem children.

It also expressed concern that children cared for by their relatives are less likely to have a care plan or an allocated social worker than those in general foster care.
