Minister kicks off Science Week Ireland

The Minster for Enterprise, Trade and Employment, Micheál Martin, has said the Government will continue to invest in science innovation because of its benefits to the economy.

The Minster for Enterprise, Trade and Employment, Micheál Martin, has said the Government will continue to invest in science innovation because of its benefits to the economy.

Speaking on the first day of Science Week Ireland, he said: “Science and engineering are vital for the country's prosperity.”

Some 350 events are taking place nationwide this week to educate young people about science and encourage them to take up careers in the area.

Employment in the IT sector is expected to grow by 11% a year until 2010.

Organiser Leo Enright said Science Week is an opportunity for people involve in science, engineering and technology to interact with young people in their area.

Mr Enright said the events will be accessible to people from all over the country.

He added that it is important to interest young people in the sciences from an early age.
