Six 100-acre sites have reportedly been shortlisted as potential locations for a new facility to replace Mountjoy Prison in Dublin.

Reports this morning said the Government was also planning to relocate the Central Mental Hospital to the same site in a move that would create the largest security complex in the state.

The poor conditions at both the hospital and prison, which are more than 150 years old, have been criticised in several reports.

This morning’s reports said the Office of Public Works was believed to be in favour of locating the new complex just off the M1 motorway close to Man’o’war in north Co Dublin.
