The Law Reform Commission has recommended the establishment of a process to allow appeals against sentences handed down by District Courts.

District Court sentence appeals 'should be allowed'

The Law Reform Commission has recommended the establishment of a process to allow appeals against sentences handed down by District Courts.

The commission has suggested the move as a response to the perceived leniency of some sentences handed down by District Court judges.

In a paper to be published today, the commission will suggest that the Director of Public Prosecutions be allowed to appeal such sentences, which he is currently not entitled to do.
