Victims want abusers to be named

Lawyers representing victims of child abuse have expressed their disappointment that individual perpetrators will not be named.

The move was announced two weeks ago when Justice Sean Ryan, the chair of the Commission to Inquire Into Child Abuse, outlined his plan for the future of the inquiry.

The commission sat today to hear responses to the plan.

James McGill, speaking for solicitors representing some of the abuse victims, said his clients welcomed Justice Ryan’s review, but were disappointed that perpetrators would not be named.

He also said they were anxious that religious institutions which still employ abuse perpetrators be subject to forensic examination.
