Man held in shooting murder probe

A man was arrested today by detectives investigating the murder of man in Belfast city centre three years ago.

He was being questioned about the killing of Paul Daly, who was shot while sitting in a car in Stephen Street.

The 38-year-old, from Laurelgrove Dale in Knockbracken, was in the car with his wife on May 4, 2001 when two gunmen fired through the window and then ran off through traffic, forcing vehicles to make emergency stops.

Meanwhile, two women and a man arrested on Monday for questioning about the murder of David Barnes in north Belfast last month have been released on police bail while further inquiries are made.

Mr Barnes, 39, was shot on May 8 as he lay sleeping in bed with his girlfriend at Brookvale Avenue.

In a separate move, detectives made a fresh appeal for information about another murder on the outskirts of Belfast on the first anniversary of the killing.

Robert Letson, 45, died in hospital on May 11 last year, a few hours after being assaulted in his home at Ardmillan Drive in Rathcoole.

Three men had broken into his flat and beaten him.
