Irishman to be deported from US after guilty plea
An Irishman who pleaded guilty to the manslaughter of another man on a holiday cruise, is to be sent home by US authorities.
William Monaghan, a 29-year-old carpenter, admitted his involvement in the death of a fellow party-cruise passenger who fell overboard to his death in San Francisco Bay in 2002.
He was acquitted of murder charges, but was facing a charge of voluntary manslaughter, which could have carried a prison sentence of 11 years, when he pleaded guilty to the lesser charge of involuntary manslaughter last Thursday.
Monaghan will now be deported having already served a two-year sentence with credit for time served.
