Opposition pressure Govt to delay e-voting

Fine Gael, Labour and the Green Party are due to introduce a private members’ motion in the Dáil tonight calling on the Government to defer the introduction of electronic voting.

The three parties want the system deferred until an independent electoral commission has been established to address concerns about possible fraud.

They have insisted that they are not opposed to electronic voting, just the haste with which ìt is being introduced nationwide.

The Taoiseach, Bertie Ahern, told reporters last night that he had full faith in the electronic voting system due to be rolled out at the local and European elections in June.
