A man has been arrested following the discovery of a large quantity of commercial explosives in Limerick.

The man who works in Ennis was arrested after a considerable amount of explosives were found in a shed in the back of a house.

The area was evacuated while members of the Army Bomb Disposal Squad and the Garda Technical Bureau examined the scene.

The man who is in his late 30s and from Dublin was arrested as part of an ongoing operation by gardaí in Limerick and Clare against the activities of dissident republicans.

Assistant Commission Dermot Jennings and Clare Chief Superintendent Liam Flynn will head the investigation into today’s incident.

The suspect is being held at Ennis Garda Station under section 30 of the Offences Against the State Act.
