Family seeks investigation into RUC officer’s murder

The family of an RUC officer killed by the IRA 12 years ago has asked the Police Ombudsman to investigate claims that Special Branch failed to act on information that could have prevented the killing.

34-year-old Colleen McMurray died in an IRA ambush on her vehicle in Newry in 1992.

A male colleague also lost a leg in the attack.

A former RUC informer known by the pseudonym Kevin Fulton has said he warned his handlers that the IRA was planning an attack after perfecting a way of triggering a bomb using a camera flash.

However, he said, no action was taken to prevent the bombing.
