George Best in court for drink-driving
Football legend George Best is due to appear in court in the UK today accused of drink-driving.
Best, 57, who is due before Wimbledon Magistrates, was charged with being over the limit after being stopped by police last Friday. If convicted he faces losing his licence for a minimum of 12 months.
The former Manchester United star was stopped by police on the A3 in Merton, south London, at around 12.20am in the early hours of last Friday.
Best was arrested and taken to a police station, where he was breath-tested.
He was charged with “driving whilst over the prescribed alcohol limit”, police said.
Best was released on bail at 6am.
He had a life-saving liver transplant in 2002.
The star is understood to be staying at a former girlfriend’s house in Surrey.
His estranged wife Alex, 32, is currently in the Australian Outback, taking part in the reality show I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here!
She issued a statement last September announcing the couple’s separation after eight years of marriage.
The Belfast-born former football great has had a well publicised battle with alcoholism.
Best was football’s first superstar, helping Manchester United win the League title in 1965 and 1967, and the European Cup in 1968.
He was also crowned European and English footballer of the year.
