Alleged rape in Cork City
A major Garda investigation was launched today after a 13-year-old girl claimed she was raped by a gang of youths.
The girl and her 17-year-old friend were leaving an amusement arcade in Cork City last night when they were allegedly attacked by a gang of up to eight male and female teenagers.
The victim’s friend had her handbag stolen by two girls among the gang during the incident in Little Hanover Street shortly before 11pm.
When the 17-year-old ran after the thieves, the 13-year-old was allegedly assaulted and raped by some of the remaining members of the gang.
After the alarm was raised, the victim was taken to the city’s Mercy Hospital where she was being examined.
A Garda spokesman confirmed an investigation into the incident had been launched, but said it was at a very early stage.
Officers sealed off the area and a full forensic examination of the scene is due to take place later.
