Two questioned over attack on police

Two people were questioned by detectives about an attack on police in Belfast early today by a crowd of up to 200 people.

The incident happened in the Monagh Road district of Belfast and one male and one female police officer were slightly injured.

The crowd threw bottles and glasses at a Police Service of Northern Ireland vehicle on patrol in the area and later other police vehicles that were called in were also targeted.

The unrest started when police questioned a youth who had been spotted throwing stones after a car had been halted by an officer.

Police were forced to withdraw from the area when the crowd attempted to open the doors of their vehicles and drag out officers.

A 39-year-old woman and a youth of 17 were detained for questioning, but later released pending reports.
