The Catholic Archbishop of Dublin, Dr Diarmuid Martin, says he is sure that Ireland will give a high priority to Africa’s problems during its presidency of the EU.

Referring to the killing of Archbishop Michael Courtney in Burundi, Dr Martin said he believed the families of that part of Africa want an end to violence in the region and a block on the arms and interference of outsiders that keep it going.

Preaching at a mass marking World Day of Peace, the archbishop added that the Irish constitution commits this country to standing alongside the families of Africa who suffer death and the consequences of conflict.
