The National Roads Authority (NRA) and Dublin City Council are rejecting the economic argument being made by those who want to see the Port Tunnel size increase.

The National Roads Authority (NRA) and Dublin City Council are rejecting the economic argument being made by those who want to see the Port Tunnel size increase.

Failure to raise the tunnel's ceiling by 25 centimetres will end up costing more than €76m, according to the Transport Umbrella Group (TUG).

They say that this will be the cost over the next 15 years if super trucks are not able to enter the tunnel.

But senior official with the NRA Hugh Creegan says the TUG are vastly overstating the savings. He insists that it is incorrect to say the economic savings will outweigh the cost.
