‘Smoking ban may be delayed by technical difficulties’

The Government’s proposed ban on smoking in all workplaces could be delayed beyond its planned implementation date, according to reports this morning.

The ban is due to come into force on January 26, but it could reportedly be delayed by a number of technical difficulties.

The technicalities include the definition of a "workplace" and uncertainty over whether the ban would apply in prisons, psychiatric hospitals, nursing homes and hotel bedrooms.

The Government is reportedly worried that any exemptions from the ban could lead to legal challenges or demands for further exemptions.

Attorney General Rory Brady is believed to be examining the issue and is expected to make recommendations to the Government shortly.
