Bus Eireann warns of border bus disruptions

Bus Eireann has advised passengers to expect serious disruption on its cross-border services today due to strike action by bus drivers in the North.

Ulsterbus and Citybus drivers are due to mount a one-day strike today as part of a pay dispute with their employers.

The stoppage is the first in a series of planned strikes every Friday for the next five weeks.

Meanwhile, commuters were urged to share cars today as a bus drivers’ strike threatened total gridlock across Northern Ireland’s road network.

Nearly a quarter-of-a-million people could face travel chaos due to the 24-hour stoppage, which went ahead after an eleventh hour legal bid failed.

With union representatives and management locked in a dispute over pay, Ulsterbus and Citybus services across the North will be halted.

The stoppage means 200,000 people who use the public transport daily, including 65,000 school children, will be forced to make alternative arrangements.

The authorities have opened bus lanes to motorists in a bid to ease the expected congestion.
