Members of Joe Higgins's Socialist Party and Independent TDs Tony Gregory and Finian McGrath are amongst those condemning David Begg for refusing to back the protest.

Last week Mr Begg said it risks driving bin lorries into the hands of private operators and putting council jobs in jeopardy.

At a Dublin press conference this afternoon, Mick O'Reilly of the ATGWU also vented his fury.
