Education Minister Noel Dempsey has defended the Government’s agreement to indemnify religious orders against compensation cases taken by victims of child abuse in state-owned institutions.

Under the deal, the religious orders agreed to give the State €128m in cash and land in return for the taxpayer footing the bill for all compensation claims.
