Survey: 'All-out smoking ban is excessive'

More than half of Irish adults believe a total ban on smoking in Irish pubs and restaurants is excessive, according to a survey commissioned by the Irish Cigarette Machine Operators Association.

The Government is planning to introduce the ban in all workplaces, including pubs and restaurants, on January 1.

The ICMOA said its survey found that two-thirds of people believe improved ventilation and segregated smoking areas would be a better alternative to an all-out ban.

Also, 72% said they would not ask a smoker to put out their cigarette after the ban was introduced.

Almost half of those questioned said they believed the hospitality industry would suffer due to the ban, while young people in particular said they feared the ban would harm the sociable atmosphere in Irish pubs.

Up to 51% of younger adults also said they believed the ban would lead to an increase in street violence because drinkers would be forced to go outside for a smoke.
