FG call for establishment of road investigation unit
Fine Gael is calling on the Government to establish a dedicated accident investigation unit to tackle Ireland's road fatality trends.
According to transport spokesperson Denis Naughten, road conditions are a hidden factor behind many accidents, but has been brushed under the carpet for years by the Government and the National Roads Authority.
He said a Road Accident Investigation Unit needs to be set up to give a true picture of the causes of serious road accidents in this country.
"What I'm calling on the Government to do is to use the PSV license inspectors within the Gardaí, who have had their role superseded by the introduction of the National Car Test.
"They are experienced gardaí, there are other additional gardaí who have done training courses in England and they should be brought together to make a road accident investigation unit that would investigate all road fatalities and publish the causes of those accidents."
