Don't drink and swim, holiday revellers warned
Swimmers were warned today about the dangers of drinking before going for a dip on the eve of Ireland’s traditionally busiest summer holiday weekend.
The Irish Water Safety Association said that three people died from drowning each August holiday weekend and that last year alcohol was involved in 37% of water fatalities.
A spokesman said the greatest risks were faced by people who did not swim often, but transformed themselves from infrequent enthusiasts to public holiday devotees.
And he added: “Coupled with the casual manner of adventurous types taking to the water, this is a lethal combination.
“It is necessary to be blunt to bring the message home to people – the water can be fun and enjoyable, but take care.”
Gardaí today spelled out to motorists that their normal public holiday enforcement campaign was in operation on the roads and would be operative throughout the weekend.
They said that checkpoints as well as mobile patrols would be visible on roads across the country, after nine people were killed and more than 140 injured over the August holiday weekend last year.
A garda statement said there would be a particular emphasis on checking for speeding, drink-driving and the non-wearing of seatbelts.
Backing the campaign, Transport Minister Seamus Brennan said: “We are all very aware of the high number of road accidents that have been a feature of recent holiday weekends.
“I ask all drivers to accept their own responsibilities.”
