An Taisce seeks protection of 1916 Rising site

Historians and environmentalists have appealed to Dublin City Council to scrap its plans to demolish the house where the leaders of the 1916 Rising decided to surrender.

The council is planning to demolish 16 Moore Street as part of the redevelopment of the old Carlton cinema site in Dublin 1.

The building was occupied by the Provisional Government leaders of 1916 after they abandoned the burning GPO during their uprising against British Rule. The group decided to surrender while inside the building and were subsequently executed by the British.

An Taisce has argued that the site is of major historical importance and should be protected.

It has also said the council is basing its assessment of the building on incorrect information suggesting that the structure dates from the 19th century, when it is actually 100 years older than that.
