Govt urged to withhold penalty points records

The National Youth Council has urged the Government not to give insurance companies access to motorists' penalty points records until the industry stops penalising young motorists because of their age.

The National Youth Council has urged the Government not to give insurance companies access to motorists' penalty points records until the industry stops penalising young motorists because of their age.

The council said the Insurance Industry Federation intends to continue charging high premiums to drivers under the age of 27, regardless of whether they have clean penalty points records.

Spokesman Colm O'Mongain said: "If a driver is 24 years old or 22 years old and has no penalty points, they'll still be penalised for being their age.

"It's a ridiculous situation. An individual's record should be the most important thing in assessing their insurance premium."
