SIPTU call for taxi regulator to suspend issuing of licences

SIPTU, which represents 2000 taxi drivers, have called for the new taxi regulator and the Minister for Transport to suspend the issuing of licences.

The Government today appointed a former secretary general of the Department of the Environment as an interim regulator for the taxi industry, more than two years after the deregulation of the sector.

Jim Farrelly will be tasked with setting the standards required of people seeking taxi licences, as well as deciding the number of taxis which would be suitable for different towns and cities.

Transport Minister Seamus Brennan said Mr Farrelly will also examine the setting of taxi fares.

A full-time regulator with statutory powers is due to be appointed later this year.

Gerry Brennan of SIPTU, which represents taxi drivers, says there will be much to discuss with the interim regulator in the coming weeks.

He said: "We would like to see Mr Farrelly and the Minister suspend the issue of the licences.

"Our members are very concerned about the number of taxi licences out there. They can no longer be assured of making a living or being able to look after their families.

Public concerns about safety in the industry have a direct impact on our member's ability to earn, if our customers do not feel safe then they will shy away from this. So all these issues need to be dealt with."
