A gardai investigation is expected to continue later this morning into the death of a newborn infant whose body was found in a dump in north Dublin yesterday.

A gardai investigation is expected to continue later this morning into the death of a newborn infant whose body was found in a dump in north Dublin yesterday.

A post mortem was completed on the child's remains by Assistant State Pathologist, Marie Cassidy, last night.

Gardai are still appealing for the mother of the young infant to come forward. The say that any approach will be treated in the strictest confidence and with appropriate sensitivity.

Gardai are concerned that the mother, who they believe left the infant's remains at the scene in Swords, may need medical attention.

The results of the post mortem have not yet been released by gardai, but initial indications were that the child was not prematurely born and did not have any marks or bruises on his body.

A separate investigation into the death of child in Co Donegal is also continuing. The 7-year-old girl died in Letterkenny General hospital after being admitted on Tuesday.

Gardai last night forensically examined a house in the town after a post mortem on the girl's body in Dublin on Wednesday proved inconclusive.
